Dr Falk Pharma Australia was established as part of the international Dr Falk Pharma group. Its parent company, Dr Falk Pharma GmbH, is an independent family company based in Freiburg Germany, with subsidiaries or distributors in more than 60 countries. The Dr Falk Pharma group has a solid global research and development pipeline focused on improving therapies and patient outcomes in the areas of digestive and metabolic disease.
Guided by the Falk philosophy, Dr Falk Pharma Australia is dedicated to improving patient outcomes by advancing the understanding and treatment of digestive and metabolic diseases. We support a wide range of scientifically independent educational initiatives designed to meet the needs of healthcare professionals and patients and contribute to the development of new therapies through our clinical research program.
Dr Herbert Falk (founder) always believed in the collaborative process, as an essential part of building knowledge. Either as part of research & development or shared learning through educational materials, congresses or symposia, Dr Falk Pharma has continued to adhere to this overall philosophy of collaboration and exchange of ideas. Dr Falk Pharma is associated with the FALK FOUNDATION e.V., an independent educational organisation supporting international further education of doctors through a wide range of events and media. In addition, the FALK FOUNDATION e.V. offers comprehensive educational information for patients and their families.
Dr Falk Pharma History and Heritage
Herbert Falk studied Pharmacy in the late 1940s in Freiburg, Germany. In 1955, he started working as a pharmacist, later taking over his father’s pharmacy. Encouraged by his initial success with cardiovascular drugs, Dr Herbert Falk founded his own company, Remefa GmbH & Co KG in 1960. In 1989 that company became Dr. Falk Pharma GmbH.
In the early 1970s, Dr Falk Pharma started marketing its products outside Germany. Today, Dr Falk Pharma products are sold in more than 60 countries across the world. The first subsidiary company was founded in 2001 in Portugal, followed by Great Britain/Ireland, Russia, Spain, Benelux, Austria and now Australia.
In the mid-1960s Herbert Falk (an entrepreneur and innovator) was concerned that traditional 'sales representative' visits to doctors were insufficient to ensure they were receiving up-to-date information about the company's products and developments in treatments. Therefore, he started to organise and support postgraduate courses for doctors. This form of support was accompanied by a growing selection of literature – booklets about disease symptoms, diagnosis, and available treatments were offered to doctors, written by leading experts in each field. These were further extended to patients, with a range of booklets for 'The Informed Patient' giving appropriate information relating to common digestive or metabolic disorders.
In October 1967, 800 doctors and scientists from 18 countries came to the Ikterus symposium. This congress marked the birth of the international Falk Symposium. Since then there have been over 200 International Falk Symposia and Workshops, and more than 100,000 healthcare professionals from over 100 nations have taken part.
The FALK FOUNDATION e.V. was established in 1978. Ensuring scientifically independent content, the Foundation organises 5-6 International Symposia with a number of workshops and 600-700 postgraduate courses and doctor-patient seminars every year.
